As you know Rotary is trying to raise funds to match
the amazing donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation and clubs have been asked to raise $1000
a year for the next three years. This has not been
helped with the poor strength of the pound against
the dollar as we have to raise more money just to
get what we were when the pound was stronger.
That said, we had targeted a figure of £1,000.00
for last year and I
am delighted to say that we finished off with £1,700.00, so a very successful year for us and thanks to everyone that supported our events and made
donations.
To continue the good work from last year the committee have a few plans for fund raising and thanks to PP Ian Macpherson, the monies raised from the Doo’s will again go to Foundation this year so we hope that you will dig deep and buy those birds. Our first fundraising event took place last week, when I arranged a round of golf at the private Archerfield Links club, just outside of Gullane. Commsworld put up two four-balls and one was taken by Jim Anderson who is arranging for some of his staff to go and this is will be played in mid-August. The second was taken by Archie King, George McGraw, David Brown and myself.
The day started of wet and for the first couple of holes it was full water-proofs and brollies, but by the 3rd hole it started to clear up and from then on we had a dry day, which made it much more enjoyable. We split into teams and George and I won the first nine, with David and Archie winning the back nine, but George and I just held on to win overall. It was a long round, just on 5 hours, but I think overall it was a success and everyone enjoyed the fellowship. The monies raised from this event will be in excess of £400.00 so not a bad start to the year.
We have a few ideas for other events and we will come back to you when they are arranged and I hope that we can count on your support to make this another successful year for Rotary Foundation.
